Gieves & Hawkes - No.1 Savile Row in London

LIFESTYLE CLUB LONDON is hosting an event with Gieves & Hawkes, one of the oldest and famous continual bespoke menswear tailors in the world, for an introduction into the world of bespoke tailoring and an exclusive look behind the scenes, on Tuesday, April 21st.

All over the world, “Savile Row” stands for the very best in English men’s tailoring. The meaning of “bespoke” is a suit made from scratch, by hand, according to a customer’s measurements. There are very few people still making bespoke suits the old-fashioned way. It still happens in traditional Italian shops and London’s Savile Row. Gieves & Hawkes is the Number 1 of Savile Row.

Gieves & Hawkes was founded in 1771 and focused originally on military tailoring for the officer classes of the Royal Navy and British Army. The company dressed Lord Nelson and the Duke of Wellington in their military best. The company’s focus shifted to bespoke menswear tailoring for the most discerning gentleman in London. . However, it still continues to produce uniforms for the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force via Gieves & Hawkes Military.

Gieves & Hawkes have a strong history of both services to the military and to the British Royalty. It holds a number of Royal Warrants, appointed to King George III, HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Prince of Wales.

In 2002, Gieves & Hawkes was bought by Hong Kong based property developer and garment manufacturer USL Holdings Ltd. In 2012, the company was acquired by Trinity Limited. The distribution of Gieves & Hawkes continues to expand with over 100 stores and concessions around the UK and in Hong Kong, China and Taiwan.

Today, Gieves & Hawkes’s customers are known to include Britain’s royal family, the Queen’s guards, Prime Minister David Cameron, chiefs of stated and royals, Bill Clinton, George W Bush, Charlie Chaplin, and David Beckham.

Tailoring has always been an intensely personal business. Nowadays, the challenge for Gieves & Hawkes is to provide the same personal touch to a fast-growing number of customers and adapting to their current lifestyles.

The Lifestyle Club has the honor of associating with Gieves & Hawkers for the event “Dressed for Success”, with complimentary drinks and canapés, personalized advice, unique access to the archive room, business card raffle with exciting prices. Spaces are limited, so please reserve your place on Eventbrite through myHult.

Healthy Romantic Dinner Recipes for Valentine's Day

Looking for a delicious and affordable way to say "I Love you " this Valentine's Day? Win your way to that special someone's heart with a romantic meal at home.

Light some candles, uncork your favorite bottle of wine and add some healthy romance to your special day with these homemade meals for two!

Cheese Stuffed Mushrooms

A blend of four cheeses, spinach, and sun-dried tomatoes tucked into savory mushroom caps, which are thought to be an aphrodisiac. The key to cutting calories from this recipe is using tomatoes that haven't been packed in oil, and going for part-skim cheese.

Spanish Tapas-Inspired Mussels

Shellfish, such as oysters and mussels, are thought to be some of nature's most powerful aphrodisiacs. In this dish, dark mussel shells provide a striking contrast to the tomatoes, onions, garlic, and fragrant saffron that come together with dry sherry to create a flavorful sause. Warm crusty French bread in the oven to soak up some of this dish's sauce.

Pomegranate Duck

Preparing duck might seem like a daunting task, but this rich recipe makes it easy by using a duck breast rather than the whole bird. The browned and roasted poultry is topped with a simple but delicious sauce that highlights the unique flavor of pomegranate.

Seared Salmon with Green Peppercorn Sauce

Green peppercorns come from the same plant as black ones, but are harvested before they mature. Typically packed in vinegar, they have a refreshingly sharp flavor. Serve with smashed red potatoes and sautéed kale.

Tunisian Vegetable Tagine

For a vegetarian addition to your Valentine's Day menu, try this flavorful stew with a North Africa-inspired spice blend of coriander, caraway, and paprika. Chickpeas and eggs provide plenty of filling protein, and precut, frozen mixed vegetables save you precious time in the kitchen.

Chocolate Fondue

It wouldn't be Valentine's Day without chocolate. Instead of the expected box of chocolates, add some fun to your meal with this fondue. Prepare the simple, rich chocolate sauce (the darker the chocolate, the healthier), and then use skewers to dip your favorite cut-up fruits. Be sure to include strawberries in the mix, as the bright-red berries are a famous aphrodisiac.

Grilled Apples With Cheese and Honey

Grill thinly sliced tart apples and top with savory cheese and toasted pecans. A light drizzle of honey, which contains boron, a mineral that can increase your body's testosterone levels, providers the perfect finish. You can also use sharp cheddar cheese in place of Parmigiano-Reggiano.

6 Ways To Boost Your Metabolism

You may have inherited your parents' slow metabolism, but you're not stuck with it. If anyone has ever told you that you're stuck with your slow metabolism, they're WRONG.

So take control of your metabolism. Here are some surprising metabolism hacks:

1. Get Your Giggle On

Genuine laughter may cause a 10-20 percent increase in basal energy expenditure and resting heart rate. That means a 10-15 minute giggle fest could burn up 40 to 170 calories. Let's lol!

2. Cool It In The Bedroom

Simply turning on the AC may subtly transform a person's stores of brown fat - "good" fat, stimulated by cold temperatures, that serves to keep us warm by burning through "bad" fat stores. A new study found that when men slept in cooler conditions, it gave their metabolism a boost. "Just by sleeping in a colder room, they gained metabolic advantages", says Francesco S. Celi, M.D., lead author of the study.

3. Spicy Up Meals

It's well known that fiery capsaicin (=hot sauce, cayenne, chilies) can boost your metabolism. Spices like chili are thought to raise metabolism by up to 50 percent for up to three hours after eating, due to increasing your heart rate.

4. Drink More Water

Drinking more water may increase the rate at which healthy people burn calories. After drinking approximately 17 ounces of water (about 2 tall glasses), metabolic rates could increase by 30 percent. The researchers estimate that increasing water intake by 1.5 liters a day (about 6 cups) would burn an extra 17,400 calories over the course of the year!

5. Eat Plenty Of Protein-rich Foods

Research shows that around 25 percent of calories in a protein-rich meal may be burnt off. But make sure you choose low-fat protein foods such as lean meat, skinless chicken and low-fat dairy products.

6. Eat Little And Often

There's evidence that eating small, regular meals throughout the day, rather than one or two large meals, may help to keep your metabolism ticking over. Around 10 percent of the calories we use each day go on digesting and absorbing food - so the more times you eat, the greater this effect is likely to be.
