LIFESTYLE CLUB LONDON is hosting an event with Gieves &
Hawkes, one of the oldest and famous continual bespoke menswear tailors in the
world, for an introduction into the world of bespoke tailoring and an exclusive
look behind the scenes, on Tuesday, April 21st.
All over the world, “Savile Row” stands for the very best in
English men’s tailoring. The meaning of “bespoke” is a suit made from scratch,
by hand, according to a customer’s measurements. There are very few people
still making bespoke suits the old-fashioned way. It still happens in
traditional Italian shops and London’s Savile Row. Gieves & Hawkes is the
Number 1 of Savile Row.
Gieves & Hawkes was founded in 1771 and focused
originally on military tailoring for the officer classes of the Royal Navy and
British Army. The company dressed Lord Nelson and the Duke of Wellington in
their military best. The company’s focus shifted to bespoke menswear tailoring
for the most discerning gentleman in London. . However, it still continues to
produce uniforms for the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force via Gieves &
Hawkes Military.
Gieves & Hawkes have a strong history of both services
to the military and to the British Royalty. It holds a number of Royal
Warrants, appointed to King George III, HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh
and HRH The Prince of Wales.
In 2002, Gieves & Hawkes was bought by Hong Kong based
property developer and garment manufacturer USL Holdings Ltd. In 2012, the
company was acquired by Trinity Limited. The distribution of Gieves &
Hawkes continues to expand with over 100 stores and concessions around the UK
and in Hong Kong, China and Taiwan.
Today, Gieves & Hawkes’s customers are known to include
Britain’s royal family, the Queen’s guards, Prime Minister David Cameron,
chiefs of stated and royals, Bill Clinton, George W Bush, Charlie Chaplin, and David
Beckham.
Tailoring has always been an intensely personal business.
Nowadays, the challenge for Gieves & Hawkes is to provide the same personal
touch to a fast-growing number of customers and adapting to their current
lifestyles.
